Going off the grid isn’t for everyone, but if you’re prepared to ditch the devices for a while, you’re in for a rewarding and worthwhile experience. And you never know; you might be able to finally finish that book…
Freshwater East beach chalet, Pembroke
Sitting directly on Pembrokeshire’s Coastal Path, this light and spacious home is perfect for those wanting to feel close to nature. Consider the poor mobile signal and the absence of Wi-Fi a plus, as it gives you breathing space to concentrate on enjoying the spectacular sea views from the living area.
You can walk climb, hike and cycle until your heart’s content in the picture-perfect Pembrokeshire countryside, before relaxing in the rolltop bath. This three bed eco home isn’t without its luxuries: a wood burning stove, underfloor heating and range oven let you get away from it all, without compromising on comfort.
The Surf and Yoga Studio, Devon
A quick browse of this beach hut-style house and you can just imagine waking up in the morning watching the sun rise with the delicate sound of birdsong carrying in the wind. Its seclusion, large balcony and low light pollution make it a great place for stargazing. There’s even a skylight over the bed, so you can drift off to sleep while observing the orbits..
To really get in touch with your inner Zen, why not use the opportunity to practice some yoga, have a go at painting the landscape or work on that novel you’ve been wanting to write? The beach is less than a mile away, so this holiday home is ideal for surfers too.
Hillview Cottage, Argyll and Bute
There’s no electricity and the heating and hot water are provided by a wood burning stove, but don’t let that put you off! What this cottage lacks in modcons it certainly makes up for in pure, uninterrupted rest and relaxation. Overlookingthe western shores to the Isle of Bute, the views are simply magical.
Talking of magic, you might feel like you’ve gone back in time when you stay at this pretty home. Built in 1896 as a gamekeeper’s cottage, there’s a real sense of history that emanates emanating from the home and the area. And although it might feel like a throwback (which is the whole point) the villages of Tighnabruaich and Kames are less than a couple of miles away and full of amenities.
Grounds Farm Shepherd’s Hut, Kenilworth
If you’re looking for a romantic retreat away from the distractions of everyday life, then this is it. This shepherd’s hut is in rolling farmland and has amazing views of the 900-year-old Kenilworth castle. It’s also within walking distance of some fantastic pubs and restaurants, but you’ll probably want to fire up the barbecue most days and admire the view with a glass of bubbly.
In fact, its relaxing atmosphere means it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to unwind after the excitement of a wedding. There may be no Wi-Fi, but hot running water, electricity and a comfy bed make this shepherd’s hut an excellent choice for a romantic escape.
Kingfisher Cottage, Cornwall
One of the main reasons families go on holiday is to enjoy some quality time together without the constant stream of social media, right? However, in an age where we expect to be ‘plugged in’ 24/7 this can be a challenge. That’s where this country cottage in Looe comes in. An idyllic rural retreat, the numerous outdoor pursuits nearby, such as walking and pony trekking, are sure to keep the whole family entertained.
If you’re travelling with little ones in tow, the owners can provide a high chair, a cot and even stair gates. So, leave the tablets at home, pack some books, binoculars and your best walking boots and escape to a place where family time is top of the agenda.
Walk Farm Hideaway, Lincolnshire
This beautiful Lincolnshire hideaway is perfect if you want to get away from the stresses and strains of modern life without giving up modern facilities. The apartment has everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay and the rolltop bath and four-poster bed add a luxurious feel.
Despite its rural setting in the outskirts of Upton village, the apartment is in a great location for sightseeing. In the nearby town of Gainsborough, visit the 500-year-old Gainsborough Old Hall or spend the day shopping in Lincoln. Whatever you feel like doing, this charming apartment invites you to do so at your own pace.
Tom’s Eco Lodge, Yarmouth
We’re being a little cheeky with this next rental as it does, in fact, have Wi-Fi and even a hot tub! But there was no way we could miss this unique and secluded gem off our list. This group of five safari-style tents are tucked away on the Isle of Wight’s Tapnell Farm and are surrounded by beautiful scenery.
As the accommodation is on a working farm, it’s perfect for families wanting to feel closer to nature. Children will love checking for eggs at the hen coop each morning and, if the weather’s not so good, there’s an indoor play barn and zip wire where they can let off steam. On sunny days, enjoy a five-minute stroll to the beach where you can catch a few rays or take a dip in the sea.
Lake Yurt, Devon
You won’t find any electricity at this traditional Mongolian yurt in Dartmoor National Park, but what you will discover is unadulterated peace and quiet. The yurt overlooks the river and is surrounded by natural beauty at every angle. It’s the perfect place to build a campfire and toast marshmallows while sharing a story or song.
With so much to do in the area from horse-riding to kayaking, you’ll probably spend most of your time outdoors. But if the night is chilly and you want to get cosy, the yurt has a wood burner and a comfy double bed so you can curl up and rest after an active day.
Waterslacks Camping Barn, Butterton
If you love camping but the wind and rain can sometimes be a little too much for you, then this converted stone field barn is a winning choice. Sitting on the edge of the steep-sided Manifold Valley, it’s ideal for walkers and nature enthusiasts who want to spend most of their time walking in the Peak District. And who can blame them? The views in this area are some of the best in the UK, if not the world.
You’ll need to bring your own camping equipment and the facilities are basic, but the escapism from modern technology is what draws guests to stay here. It’s designed for families and friends wanting to spend time together, let their hair down and take a breather from the rat race.
Isle of Man Beach Holiday Cottage, Peel
A stone’s throw from the seafront, this historic Manx fisherman’s cottage is oozing with character and charm. If you want a digital detox but don’t want to sacrifice your home comforts, this is the cottage for you. You’ll be treated to complimentary wine and chocolates on arrival, which you can enjoy on the decking area as you watch the sunset. Come morning, stroll along the nearby promenade and watch the boats gently swaying in the breeze.
Fancy taking to the water yourself? A boat is included with this rental, so you’ll be able to ditch the smart phones, sail on the sea and leave the modern world behind.
