Welcome back to our New Home of the Month series, where we’ll be showcasing fabulous holiday homes from around the world – all of which are available for you to rent through holidaylettings.co.uk. In November, a rustic villa just off the northern coast of Sicily scooped the award. But this month we visit a gorgeous Georgian family home in Bath…
Hatfield House is a stunning family abode in Widcombe, one of Bath’s trendiest districts. The two-storey, limestone home looks out over the idyllic Kennet and Avon canal and is only a ten minute stroll from the city centre.
Tastefully designed throughout, this historic home has plenty of original Georgian features. The spacious kitchen, with its large dining table, is perfect for hosting boisterous family mealtimes. It has some colourful chairs too which add a touch of personality to the room. Love to cook? You can broaden your culinary repertoire by leafing through the cook books. They’ll help provide gastronomic inspiration.
Also on the ground floor is the large main bedroom (with a king-size bed) and an adjoining wet room with a state-of-the-art shower. It’s the ideal space for a couple looking for a bit of privacy in a family home.
The cosy living room at the front of the house is a luxurious holiday haven. Stylishly decorated, you’ll love snuggling on the deep sofas and unwinding in front of the roaring fire on chilly evenings.
On the first floor, there’s a large family bathroom with a corner shower and an elegant roll top bath for long evening soaks. Down the hall, there’s a double room (with two single beds which can zip together) and a further single room with beautiful views of the glorious garden below.
This private garden is a natural suntrap, so when the sun starts to rise in the morning make sure you’re out there to appreciate it. There’s also a good-sized lawn which is brilliant for summertime games with the kids.
Travellers with a penchant for old and characterful buildings will be in their element in Bath. The historic city is full of breath-taking features: Bath Abbey, the striking St Michael’s church and Grade II listed Empire Hotel are all within strolling distance.
Hatfield House itself is ideal for a weekend family break or as a cosy base for a longer stay. In the warmer months, the private garden at the rear of the property makes for a prime spot for evening soirées or a stress-free barbeque.
With Bath train station just a short walk away, the house is perfectly situated for holidaymakers who either don’t have a car or want to leave it (and the stress of driving) at home.
Picturesque Bath is one of the country’s must-see destinations. The Somerset gem is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, set on the tip of the rolling Cotswolds hills. It’s a special city, bursting with attention-grabbing architecture and interesting historical sites. Perhaps the most famous of these is the beautifully preserved Roman Baths, right in the heart of town. Take a walk around the ancient complex and admire the spa water which has filled the bathing site for over two millennia.
Just outside the city, Prior Park is a wonderfully intimate landscaped garden. It’s protected by the National Trust and is a delightful space to spend an afternoon at one with nature.
If rambling is your thing, you can enjoy spectacular views of the city on the popular Bath Skyline walking trail. The view when you reach Bathwick fields will make the challenging hike all the sweeter.
Right on Bath’s doorstep are The Cotswolds, one of the country’s most-loved Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Venture just a few miles away from Hatfield House and you’ll be able to enjoy the sweeping meadows and pretty villages which make ‘The Wolds’ such a special part of England. For a great day out, head north to the handsome market towns of Stroud (30 miles) or Cirencester (37 miles).
Like maritime history? Set your course west to the vibrant city of Bristol (13 miles). There you can learn about the port’s important seafaring heritage at one of the city’s numerous museums before enjoying a bite to eat in one of the transformed former industrial warehouses around the harbour.
